New Contract Postal Unit Opens in Kailua

Aspiring to be the 'Cheers' of the Postal World

Honolulu — Just in time for the holidays, a new Contract Postal Unit (CPU) is opening in the middle of Kailua town. The Kailua CPU will be opening on Saturday, Dec. 8 within the Nook & Cranny professional cleaning service store at 270 Kuulei Road, next to The Bike Shop and just across from the Kailua Library.

The Kailua CPU is one of 16 CPUs on Oahu and one of 23 statewide. It features all of the services of a regular post office, except for P.O. Box rentals and the sale of money orders. The Kailua CPU is open for business from 7 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. on weekdays and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays. It is closed on federal holidays.

The Kailua CPU and Nook & Cranny are owned and operated by Candas Smiley. "I opened the CPU because I wanted to increase our interaction with our many Kailua friends and neighbors and to make better use of our office space," she said. "The CPU will have a family-friendly atmosphere, with comfy sofas and chairs for customers to relax in, hang out and just talk story while awaiting their turn. Our goal is to be the 'Cheers' of the postal world — friendly, comfortable and a place where we know everyone's name!"

"This new CPU will make it easier for our many of our Kailua customers to access our services," said U.S. Postal Service Retail Manager Nancy Wong. "Now they can choose to buy their stamps or mail their packages from either this CPU or the Kailua Post Office. I imagine a lot of people will be especially happy to have this second option during the holidays, as the Kailua Post Office will probably be very busy over the next few weeks."

The only other CPU in the Kailua area, the Enchanted Lakes CPU, closed in June.

An independent federal agency, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that visits every address in the nation, 146 million homes and businesses, six days a week. It has 37,000 retail locations and relies on the sale of postage, products, and services to pay for operating expenses, not tax dollars. The Postal Service has annual revenues of $75 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail.
