USPS Makes Changes to Serve Customers’ Shipping Needs

Pembroke Pines FL—The package business gets more competitive every day. The other players — UPS, FedEx, and DHL — aren’t just delivering packages. They also have retail storefronts to accept those packages from consumers and small businesses.

Effective Monday, June 9, several South Florida Post Offices are changing their weekday retail hours to match those of nearby shipping centers operated by postal competitors.

The Postal Service, now allowed to price its products competitively, is setting out to remind the world that it’s a shipping company — and that it wants to become America’s shipper of choice. We have great shipping services, and major enhancements are under way to make them even better. Express Mail, our premier overnight product, and Priority Mail, our two- to three-day product, are being improved and priced to make them more attractive to customers, as are our ground and international products.

For most consumers and small businesses, our prices are already better than what the competition offers at their retail locations. As of May 12, 2008, our shipping services will be even more competitive. All Express Mail pieces under five pounds, for example, will be less expensive than FedEx, no matter where they’re going.

The change will help us grow our shipping services revenue, improve customer satisfaction, and build customer loyalty — all of which are key to the Postal Service’s continued financial health.

Yet those changes to our shipping services won’t do us much good if customers can’t get to our Post Offices. That’s why these Post Offices are changing their weekday retail hours effective Monday, June 9:

An independent federal agency, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that visits every address in the nation — 146 million homes and businesses. It has 37,000 retail locations and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses, not tax dollars. The Postal Service has annual revenues of $75 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail.
