Letter Carriers to Collect Canned Goods For Annual Drive on Saturday, May 10

Stamp Out Hunger LogoPembroke Pines FL— Every day postal employees connect families, friends, and business associates through the mail.

On Saturday, May 10, letter carriers and rural letter carriers will be doing much more than that. They’ll be participating  in the 16th annual National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) Food Drive, the largest one-day food collection in the nation.

South Florida carriers will be sporting their NALC Food Drive tee-shirts to promote the drive starting Monday, May 5.

During the week of May 5, they’ll also be delivering a Publix grocery bag to every residence in Florida.  You’re encouraged to help “Stamp Out Hunger!” by leaving a generous donation of non-perishable canned goods at your home mailbox for your carrier to pick up on Saturday, May 10.  Suggested food items include canned meats and fish, canned soup, juice, pasta, vegetables, cereal, and rice.

An estimated 30 million people — including 12 million children — face hunger every day in America.  The U.S. Department of Agriculture reminds us that millions of Americans are making decisions between rent, utilities, medicine, and food.  Its annual study of hunger in America indicates the number of people who are struggling to make ends meet and put food on the table, has increased from 35.1 million to more than 35.5 million people.

The “Stamp Out Hunger!” effort is the nation's largest single-day food drive, having collected more than 836 million pounds of food since its inception in 1993.  In addition to the U.S. Postal Service, supporting the drive again this year are Campbell Soup Company, America's Second Harvest -  the Nation's Food Bank Network, Valpak - Cox Target Media, the AFL-CIO, and United Way of America.

An independent federal agency, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that visits every address in the nation — 146 million homes and businesses. It has 37,000 retail locations and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses, not tax dollars. The Postal Service has annual revenues of $75 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail.
