Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive

Fort Myers, Cape Coral Fl — On Saturday, May 10, letter carriers across America will collect donations of non-perishable food items from homes and deliver them to food bank members of America’s Second Harvest; The Nation’s Food Bank Network and other hunger relief organizations in more than 10,000 local communities.

An estimated 38 million people face hunger every day in America, including more than 9 million children. Food banks are notoriously bare during summer months, as most food drives are conducted around the holidays and those donated goods are distributed throughout the spring. Summer donations are also critical, because many hungry children no longer have the benefit of their school lunch program.

In the Fort Myers / Cape Coral area, out of 416 mail routes, 256 are rural mail routes where the letter carrier uses their private vehicle for the delivery of the mail. These rural letter carriers will struggle to collect food for the May 10 Food Drive as their vehicles are not large enough to accommodate mail, packages and collected food. Community volunteers are needed to assist these carriers with the collection of food on their mail routes. Anyone who can volunteer to help with the collection of food in their neighborhood or in other areas is asked to contact Debra Mitchell at 573-9638. Volunteers will receive a food drive t-shirt and signage for their vehicle.

Last year 375,465 pounds of food was collected in the Fort Myers / Cape Coral area with all donations staying in our community to feed the hungry.

The Postal Service has annual revenues of $75 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail.
