Stamp Showcase

Publc Invisted to Black History Month Program

As part of Black History Month, the U.S. Postal Service, Lee County Chapter of NAACP, and Michigan International Academy will join together to pay homage to Charles W. Chestnutt, the honoree of this year’s Black Heritage series commemorative postage stamp.  The public is invited to attend the free program on Friday, Feb. 29, at 1:00 p.m. at the school, located at 4312 Michigan Avenue, Fort Myers.

All attendees will receive a limited edition, first day of issue cover with the Charles W. Chestnutt postage stamp affixed. The envelope will be postmarked with the Jan. 31 first day of issue date. The U.S. Postal Service has issued a 41-cent Charles W. Chestnutt commemorative stamp in one design in a pressure-sensitive adhesive pane of 20 stamps.

The 31st stamp in the Black Heritage series honors Chestnutt, a pioneering writer recognized today as a major innovator and singular voice among turn-of-the-century literary realists who proved the color line in American life. He was the first African-American fiction writer to earn national acclaim for his depictions of the African-American experience before and after the Civil War.

An independent federal agency, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that visits every address in the nation — 146 million homes and businesses. It has 37,000 retail locations and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses, not tax dollars. The Postal Service has annual revenues of $75 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail.
