Free West Palm Beach Seminar Set for Monday, October 19

West Palm Beach FL—In support of “National Breast Cancer Awareness Month,” West Palm Beach City Postmaster Maribeth A. Norman invites the public to free seminar, “Bring Your Lunch and Learn the Myths or Facts of Breast Cancer,” on Monday, October 19, from 11:00 am to 1:30 pm.

This breast cancer awareness event will take place on the third floor of the West Palm Beach Public Library Auditorium at 411 Clematis Street in West Palm Beach. Bring a brown bag lunch and listen to the testimonials of breast cancer survivors and a presentation by Sandra Blank, Executive Director, Florida Breast Cancer Resource Network.

Norman encourages attendees to purchase a supply of Breast Cancer Research semi-postal stamps available at the event to “send a message from the heart.”

The 55-cent Breast Cancer Research semi-postal stamp covers the 44-cent single-piece, one- ounce First-Class letter rate and donates the additional 11 cents to breast cancer research. By law, 70 percent of the net amount raised goes to the National Institutes of Health and 30 percent goes to the Medical Research Program at the Department of Defense. Postal customers nationwide have purchased more than 800 million Breast Cancer Research semi-postal stamps—raising $67.6 million for research—since this first semi-postal stamp in history was issued in 1998.

The Breast Cancer Research semi-postal stamp shows Artemis, the Greek goddess of the hunt, to symbolize the fight against breast cancer. The female hunter is depicted reaching for an arrow, to symbolize that she protects women from harm and to mimic the position women take during a breast exam. The illustration is a black line drawing of the female figure on a vibrant, abstract color field, done in pastel, which gives the stamp its optimistic or uplifting feel. Typographically, the stamp includes the phrases, "Fund the Fight," and "Find a Cure" outlining where the right breast should be.
