Fort Lauderdale Post Office to Host
‘Breast Cancer Awareness Day’ Oct 14

Breast Cancer stamp

Fort Lauderdale FL—Heart disease is the number one cause of death among women age 40 and above, followed by stroke, lung cancer, and lung diseases. The fifth leading cause of death — breast cancer.

On Wednesday, October 14, the Fort Lauderdale Main Post Office, located at 1900 West Oakland Park Blvd, is hosting “Breast Cancer Awareness Day” in the lobby from 9 am to 1 pm. The public is invited to pick up information on breast cancer and free mammograms. Health professionals will offer free bone density screenings onsite.

At 10:30 am, Customer Service Manager Angela Randle will dedicate an enlargement of the Breast Cancer Research semi-postal stamp in the lobby. The 55-cent Breast Cancer Research semi-postal stamp covers the 44-cent single-piece, one-ounce First-Class letter rate and donates the additional 11 cents to breast cancer research. By law, 70 percent of the net amount raised goes to the National Institutes of Health and 30 percent goes to the Medical Research Program at the Department of Defense. Postal customers nationwide have purchased more than 800 million Breast Cancer Research semi-postal stamps—raising $67.6 million for research—since this first semi-postal stamp in history was issued in 1998.

The Breast Cancer Research semi-postal stamp features artwork of the mythical “goddess of the hunt.” The female hunter is depicted reaching for an arrow, to symbolize that she protects women from harm and to mimic the position women take during a breast exam. The illustration is a black line drawing of the female figure on a vibrant, abstract color field, done in pastel, which gives the stamp its optimistic or uplifting feel. Typographically, the phrases, "Fund the Fight" and "Find a Cure" outline where the right breast should be.

To support the fight against breast cancer, purchase this stamp at tomorrow’s “Breast Cancer Awareness Day” event or visit any local Post Office, call 1-800-STAMP24, or visit usps.com.
