Modified Postal Collections & Retail Hours for Dec. 24 & Dec. 31

Some Post Offices Opening later on Dec. 26 & Jan. 2

DELAWARE — Delaware postal officials today announced modified collection times and Post Office retail hours for Wednesday, December 24, 2008 and Wednesday, December 31, 2008.  Mail collection from official postal collection boxes and other postal locations will follow the posted morning (AM) collection schedule.  All other collection boxes with a posted afternoon/evening (PM) collection time will be collected by 12 noon. Officials also announced that some Post Offices will open later on Friday, December 26, 2008 and Friday, January 2, 2009. Regular mail delivery will be unaffected by these changes.

Many businesses close early on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve and the number of customers visiting Post Office lobbies greatly diminishes. The Main Office Window (Hares Corner) located at 147 Quigley Blvd., in New Castle DE and the Dover Post Office located at 55 The Plaza, in Dover DE will  close at 5 p.m. on Dec. 24 and Dec. 31.

Revised hours will be posted at each Post Office. To obtain the phone number of a specific Post Office, customers may call 1-800-ASK-USPS. Commercial customers are asked to check with their Bulk Mail Acceptance Unit for hours of operation.

Post Offices will be closed on Dec. 25 and Jan. 1. Express Mail will be delivered on Christmas Day, Dec. 25 and on New Year’s Day.

An independent federal agency, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that visits every address in the nation — 146 million homes and businesses. It has 37,000 retail locations and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses, not tax dollars. The Postal Service has annual revenues of $75 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail.
