Post Office Closes For New Year's Day
Resolve in 2009 to Return Postal Equipment, Officials Ask
Hartford – Post Offices across Connecticut will close on Thursday, January 1, to celebrate New Year's Day. Except for Express Mail, there will be no delivery of mail on New Year's Day.
There will be regular window hours and delivery service on both New Year's Eve and again on Friday, January 2.
The Postal Service’s Connecticut District serves more than 3.5 million postal customers over more than 5,000 square miles through 218 post offices and an additional 80 stations and branches.
Resolve to return postal equipment
Traditions of the season include the making of New Year's resolutions, a tradition that dates back to the early Babylonians. While modern resolutions might include losing weight or quitting smoking, the most popular Babylonian resolution was to return borrowed farm equipment.
Postal officials encourage area postal customers to begin the New Year by returning postal equipment such as trays, tubs, pallets and rolling stock. Even small returns yield large dividends for the Postal Service.
In one week's time in November, postal inspectors around the country recovered more than 50,000 of its bright orange, plastic pallets valued at $1 million.
Last year the Postal Service spent $40 million on mail transportation equipment such as pallets.
