The "Wee Deliver" In School Postal Service Postmaster Installation Ceremony
St Cecilia Elementary School, 1186 Newfield Ave Stamford CT 06905

Stamford CT — Neither rain, nor snow nor the third period bell will keep these couriers from their appointed rounds as the St. Cecilia Elementary School begins its 14th year of its in-school Wee Deliver student Post Office.

Stamford Postmaster Mark Dolan will perform the swearing in ceremony for the 12 fifth grade students selected for the position of Postmaster for the Wee Deliver Post Office.

Three Postmasters serve each of four sessions of programming at St. Cecelia School. Each session also employs a number of postal employees to sort, straighten, postmark and deliver the mail. Students in classrooms throughout the school write letters that the Wee Deliver postal employees will process and deliver. Postmasters are students with previous Wee Deliver experience.

The Wee Deliver program was designed to help children improve their reading and writing skills. It also teaches them to be responsible for completing the specific jobs that have been assigned to them. The program originated under Postal Service sponsorship in 1991.

St Cecilia's Elementary School has participated in the Wee Deliver in-school Post Office and Literacy Program since 1994.

According to Megan Janik, the school’s Wee Deliver coordinator, additional Wee Deliver activities throughout the year include:

  • Design a Stamp art contest
  • Most Creative envelope contest
  • "This Is What I Am Most Thankful For" contest — children write poems, prayers or compositions about reasons they are thankful.

St. Cecilia Elementary School Dr Joann Borchetta will attend Wednesday’s installation assembly, with recognition to Wee Deliver school assistants Christine Focke and Margaret Fraioli.

An independent federal agency, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that visits every address in the nation, 146 million homes and businesses, six days a week. It has 37,000 retail locations and relies on the sale of postage, products, and services to pay for operating expenses, not tax dollars. The Postal Service has annual revenues of $75 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail.
