The Long Between Two Storms

CT Post Offices Brace for Extra Mail, Extra Hours for Mailing (and extra snow!)

What happens when Santa meets Old Man Winter, just as Connecticut residents head out for a rush of holiday errands?

When it comes to mailing, they can breathe a sigh of relief, as many area Post Offices will extend their hours on Saturday and Sunday for those on the run.

The extra hours come just before Monday, Dec. 17, what postal officials traditionally call the busiest mailing day of the year.

On Monday, more than 275 million cards and letters are expected to be mailed, more than three times the average daily volume of 82 million. Total mail volume (cards, letters, catalogs, packages, magazines) for the busiest day should approach 1 billion, up from an average daily volume of 703 million pieces.

An independent federal agency, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that visits every address in the nation, 146 million homes and businesses, six days a week. It has 37,000 retail locations and relies on the sale of postage, products, and services to pay for operating expenses, not tax dollars. The Postal Service has annual revenues of $75 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail.
