A Temporary Change of Address for Gales Ferry Post Office

Roof collapses during rains, forcing quick move to Ledyard

LEDYARD CT—It’s the time of year when some local residents look to a short-term change of address as they relocate for the winter months in warmer climates. But in Gales Ferry, it is the post office that is filing the change of address.

Heavy rains and roof construction already underway contributed to a roof cave-in, including the collapse of the interior plaster roof, at the Gales Ferry Post Office today. No injuries to customers or employees occurred and there was no compromise to the mail.

However, at the close of business today and until further notice, the Gales Ferry Post Office will suspend service.

Local postal officials do not yet have a timetable for the repair to the facility. The collapse of the roof poses both security and safety concerns, including water exposure to the electrical system in that office.

In the interim, affected post office box customers are instructed to pick up mail at the Ledyard Post Office (764 Colonel Ledyard Highway, Ledyard) which is approximately one-quarter of a mile away. The Gales Ferry Post Office has approximately 350 post office box customers. There are no letter carriers associated with that unit.

A poster on the door of the facility is being placed, prominently, this afternoon.

A separate instruction will be provided to each Gales Ferry customer as they visit Ledyard as well.

Postal officials remind Gales Ferry customers that handout service will be provided and identification may be requested.

The Gales Ferry Post Office is located at 12 Military Highway, in Gales Ferry. The ZIP Code is 06335.
