Save Money, Convenience & Airport Hassles

Ship Your Air Travel Items in Advance With the U.S. Postal Service

DENVER, CO — Are you planning a business or vacation air travel trip? Don’t want to pay extra for checking that oversized bag or the inconvenience of carrying some items with you. Why not consider shipping your items with the U.S. Postal Service?

The Postal Service offers some of the lowest shipping prices around for shipping baggage and other items. The Postal Service is also extremely convenient. In many areas, besides going to any Post Office, you can ship your items using Click-N-Ship at usps.com from your home/business with free carrier pickup. And by mailing in advance, your items will be awaiting your arrival.

You can also save considerably compared to high airline fees for an oversized or 3rd bag. Compare prices for a customer to ship his/her oversized luggage or third bag (31x24x12 inches) weighing 50 lbs. from Denver to Chicago. Some airlines would charge $100 to $125. Using Priority Mail, the Postal Service would charge $45.20 with two-three day delivery service.

Consumers can easily find out how much it costs to use the Postal Service to ship their baggage/packages anywhere by going to usps.com. Click on "calculate postage," fill in the size and weight information, type of delivery service needed, and the addresses/ZIP Codes of your originating city and destination.

One of the best shipping values is the Priority Mail Large Flat Rate Box. Using the Priority Mail Large Flat Rate Box, which is 12x12x5½ inches in size and holds 800 cubic inches, items can be mailed up to 70 lbs. in weight, to any U.S. destination for only $12.95, with 2-3 day delivery. All Priority Mail and Express Mail packaging materials are available free at Post Offices, or can be ordered free on-line at usps.com.

Air travel customers can also conveniently take their baggage and packages to any Post Office for mailing prior to departing on their trips. Customers can also purchase insurance and delivery confirmation for a very low fee.

In addition, a number of larger cities, including Denver, have full-service airport Post Offices, offering all mailing services including package shipping. Airport customers can also save by mailing some of their items by Priority Mail to keep their baggage under the 50 lb. airline oversized limit.

The Post Office at Denver International Airport (DIA) is located on the 6th Floor Main Terminal, west side, behind the United Airlines ticket counter. The DIA Post Office’s customer service hours are 7 a.m to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

It has 37,000 retail locations and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses, not tax dollars. The Postal Service has annual revenues of $75 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail.
