Colorado/Wyoming Post Offices tie for highest Quarter 2 score - 98% - in the nation for on-time local First-Class Mail service

DENVER, CO — Colorado and Wyoming Post Offices have achieved their highest service score ever — 98 percent — in local on-time First-Class Mail delivery for the recent postal quarter. That 98 percent score ties the national record for highest on-time delivery score for overnight First-Class Mail service. Both states previous combined high score was 97 percent, recorded several times previously.

IBM Global Business Surveys conducts the quarterly audits of First-Class mail on-time delivery performance, called EXFC. IBM has anonymous mailers who drop unidentifiable First-Class mail pieces of all sizes and shapes into the mail system daily. IBM audits the delivery results of those mail pieces covering particular ZIP Codes. The process measures First-Class Mail from the time it is deposited into a local collection box until it is delivered to its destination.

The score essentially means that 98 out of every 100 First-Class Mail pieces mailed within that overnight ZIP Code metropolitan area are processed and delivered the next day.

Colorado/Wyoming Post Offices’ 98 percent score tied with five other postal districts out of 80 postal geographic districts in the U.S. for top score in the recent quarter. On-time mail service was audited during the second quarter period covering January 1 to March 31, 2008. The national on-time average for local on-time delivery of First-Class mail for postal districts covering all 50 states was 96 percent.

“Our postal employees and customers can be very proud of this major accomplishment,” says Selwyn Epperson, district manager in charge of all Post Offices for both states. “They rank among the best states in the country for having top mail service. I thank our postal employees for their excellent service and our postal customers for their great support.”

The Colorado and Wyoming Postal District has 603 Post Offices and 14,000 postal employees. They process and deliver an average 13.4 million pieces of mail daily to nearly 2.8 million addresses in both states – a geographic area that includes over 201,000 square miles.

An independent federal agency, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that visits every address in the nation — 146 million homes and businesses. It has 37,000 retail locations and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses, not tax dollars. The Postal Service has annual revenues of $75 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail.
