Yuba City Letter Carrier Rescues Residents From Apartment Fire

YUBA CITY, CA — Yuba City Letter Carrier Gerald Arnold was making his appointed rounds when he came upon an apartment on King Avenue with smoke coming from the rear roof of the building. As a neighbor called 911, Arnold began banging hard on the front door. Believing that the residents were sleeping, Arnold banged harder until he heard screaming from inside. One of the residents finally opened the door and rushed out of the apartment.

Arnold stayed on site and ran to the corner street to flag down the approaching fire truck and directed them to the apartment fire.

"Every day, on any given street, in some neighborhood in America, there is a letter carrier who performs an act of heroism," said Yuba City Postmaster John Batch. "Arnold’s quick action while on his appointed rounds is an example of how our postal employees are the eyes and ears of the neighborhoods they serve.”

It has 37,000 retail locations and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses, not tax dollars. The Postal Service has annual revenues of $75 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail.
