Big Sur Basin Fire Affects Mail Delivery

Big Sur, CA – The mandatory evacuation of both sides of Highway 1 running through the Big Sur community has forced the closure of the Big Sur Post Office. Affected residents with proper ID can pick up their mail at the Monterey Post Office, 565 Hartnell Street, Monday though Friday, 8:30a.m. to 5:00p.m., and Saturday, 10:00a.m. to 2:00p.m. The Monterey Post Office has assigned a retail clerk for the sole purpose of assisting Big Sur residents. An independent federal agency, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that visits every address in the nation — 146 million homes and businesses. It has 37,000 retail locations and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses, not tax dollars. The Postal Service has annual revenues of $75 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail.
