Los Altos Post Office is on the Move

Move to New Location Begins January 30, 2010

LOS ALTOS, CA — The Los Altos Main Post Office, located at 100 1st St. is winding down operations in anticipation of a move to its new location at 221 Main St., in downtown Los Altos. The move will begin on Saturday, Jan. 30, with the new office opening for business on Feb. 1, 2010.

This move follows on the heels of the relocation of the downtown Los Altos letter carrier unit, which took place on Jan. 16, 2010. The letter carrier unit that was located in the Main Post Office at 100 1st Street moved to the Loyola Corners Station, located at 1525 Miramonte Ave., Los Altos.

An important change for business mail customers is that the new facility on Main Street will offer retail and P.O. Box services only, with no means to accept business mail. Beginning Feb. 1, all business mail must be presented at the Loyola Corners Station.

Although delivery was not affected by the carrier move, there was an important change for customers. If a customer receives a notice from the Postal Service that they have a parcel to pick up, or mail that requires a signature, they will no longer do so at the downtown Post Office. If a customer receives a notice, they will pick up their package or sign for their mail at the Loyola Corners Station on Miramonte Avenue. The Loyola Corners Station also offers passport services.

A self-supporting government enterprise, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation, 150 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes. The Postal Service receives no tax dollars. With 36,000 retail locations and the most frequently visited website in the federal government, the Postal Service relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses. Named the Most Trusted Government Agency five consecutive years and the sixth Most Trusted Business in the nation by the Ponemon Institute, the Postal Service has annual revenue of more than $68 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail. If it were a private sector company, the U.S. Postal Service would rank 26th in the 2008 Fortune 500.
