Charles Mittan to be Sworn in as Merced Postmaster

MERCED, CA—Charles Mittan will follow a proud tradition dating back to 1870 when William P. Fowler was the first person sworn in as the Merced Postmaster. On Friday, November 6, 2009, 11:00 a.m., Mittan will raise his right hand to take the official oath of office at the Merced Post Office, 2334 M St., Merced CA 95340.

Mittan, 50, started his Postal Service career in 1985 as a city letter carrier in Fullerton. After a couple of years delivering the mail, he decided that managing a delivery unit was more to his liking. He was soon promoted to a Supervisor, Delivery Service in Fullerton. In 2005, he transferred to the Modesto Post Office as a Supervisor, Customer Service, later becoming Manager, Customer Service in the same Post Office.

“It is an honor to serve the people of Merced,” said Mittan. “I look forward to being a part of the community and providing excellent service to all my customers in a cost-efficient manner.”

Mittan and his wife, Judy, reside in Merced.

Mittan believes in community participation, and has joined the local Chamber of Commerce. Mittan enjoys bike riding and woodworking. He and his wife enjoy taking trips to national forests in their RV, like Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon, and they try to make an annual trip to Yosemite. Mittan feels now that they live in “The Gateway to Yosemite” those trips will be more frequent and easier.

As Merced Postmaster, Mittan oversees 103 employees who process and deliver a daily mail volume of 93,689 pieces to 28,562 delivery points (addresses) over 42 city routes and 12 rural routes, and 2,451 Post Office boxes.

Bobbi Riley, Manager Post Office Operations, will administer the oath of office.

A self-supporting government enterprise, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation, 150 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes. The Postal Service receives no tax dollars. With 36,000 retail locations and the most frequently visited website in the federal government, the Postal Service relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses. Named the Most Trusted Government Agency five consecutive years and the sixth Most Trusted Business in the nation by the Ponemon Institute, the Postal Service has annual revenue of more than $68 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail. If it were a private sector company, the U.S. Postal Service would rank 26th in the 2008 Fortune 500.
