Postal Service to Study Operations at the Salinas Mail Processing Facility

SALINAS, CA—The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) announced that in a continuing effort to improve productivity and increase efficiency, it will begin an Area Mail Processing (AMP) feasibility study at the Salinas Processing and Distribution Facility (P&DF) located at 1011 Post Drive, Salinas CA 93907.

An AMP study involves a review of mail processing and transportation operations of a Postal facility. The purpose of this study is to see if some mail processing operations at Salinas can be consolidated into the San Jose Processing and Distribution Center located at 1750 Lundy Ave., San Jose CA.

The Postal Service is confronting one of the most difficult challenges in its history. Last year mail volume declined by more than 9 billion pieces. This year the USPS faces a loss of 20 billion more pieces and a projected net loss of $7 billion.

The USPS has to realign its processing and delivery network to match its resources with its workload. There is an excess of equipment, staff and facilities to process a declining volume of mail. Consolidating some postal operations only makes logical business sense given the economic realities.

If the feasibility study supports the business case for changing some mail processing operations, a public meeting will be held to allow members of the community to ask questions and to provide feedback. All comments will be considered in any decision.

The public may also submit written comments to:

An independent federal agency, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation, 149 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes, six days a week. It has 34,000 retail locations and relies on the sale of postage, products and services, not tax dollars, to pay for operating expenses. Named the Most Trusted Government Agency five consecutive years by the Ponemon Institute, the Postal Service has annual revenue of $75 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail.
