Postal Service to hold Aug. 5 public meeting on Oxnard mail processing study

OXNARD, CA—The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) will hold a public meeting on Aug. 5 to discuss its proposal to move some mail processing operations from the Oxnard Processing and Distribution Facility (P&DF) into the Santa Clarita Processing & Distribution Center (P&DC) in Valencia. The meeting will take place from 6 P.M. to 8 P.M., in the Oxnard Room of the Oxnard Performing Arts & Convention Center, 800 Hobson Way, in Oxnard.

While a final decision has not been reached, Postal Service managers will give an overview at the meeting of the reasons for the proposal and its possible outcomes, and will listen to community comments. A summary of the proposal, the meeting agenda and presentation materials will be made available to the public on usps.com prior to the meeting.

With the drastic decline in mail volume due to current economic conditions, the Postal Service has an excess of employees and equipment in some mail processing operations. A study was begun on Apr. 29, 2009, at the Oxnard P&DF to determine the feasibility of consolidating some operations and to see if any efficiencies and cost savings would be achieved by doing so.

The study supports consolidating outgoing mail processing operations currently performed at the Oxnard facility and taking advantage of available processing capacity at the Santa Clarita plant. This move would not change the time of day that mail is collected or delivered to local customers. Bulk business mail acceptance at the Oxnard facility would also remain the same.

The Oxnard study projects the proposed consolidation would save the USPS approximately $1.8 million annually. A net decrease of approximately 20 employee positions is estimated. Job reassignments would be made in accordance with existing collective bargaining agreements.

The public is invited to submit comments in writing and can send them to:

Consumer Affairs Manager
Sierra Coastal District
28201 Franklin Pky.
Santa Clarita CA 91383-9606

Written comments must be postmarked by Aug. 20, 2009, to be included in the study.

It has 34,000 retail locations and relies on the sale of postage, products and services, not tax dollars, to pay for operating expenses.
