Nola Benedict to be Sworn in as Postmaster of Arcata
ARCATA, CA — Nola Benedict, newly appointed Arcata Postmaster, will be officially sworn in on Thursday, April 16, 2009, at 11:30 a.m. The installation ceremony will take place at the Arcata Post Office, 799 H St., and the media and public are invited to attend.
A 23-year veteran of the U.S. Postal Service, Benedict began her career as a substitute rural carrier in Montague, CA. In 2006, she transferred to the Arcata Post Office as a supervisor of customer service, and was promoted to postmaster on Jan. 31 of this year. She entered the management ranks in Red Bluff, CA, in 2005 after graduating from the Associate Supervisor Program.
Benedict is an active member of the community. Most recently, she partnered with the Arcata Chamber of Commerce to offer a special cancellation to commemorate the town’s 150th anniversary. Each November, Benedict also hosts an annual Passport Fair at the Humboldt State University Cultural Days event. Benedict served as a Montague Elementary School board member for two terms. She also served as California vice president for the California Rural Letter Carriers Association.
A native of Ashland, OR, Benedict grew up in Siskiyou County. She is married to husband, Richard, and has two sons who reside in the Sacramento area with their families. Benedict is a member of the McKinleyville Baptist Church and serves on various committees.
With 60 employees, the Arcata Post Office serves the cities of Arcata and McKinleyville along with the communities of Samoa, Manilla, Fieldbrook, Glendale, portions of Blue Lake and Kneeland. It has 28 delivery routes serving 20,000 businesses and residences.
Over the span of 157 years, 22 postmasters have served the community. Benedict will be the 23rd postmaster to proudly serve this community and only the third woman promoted to this position.
