USPS announces seven postal stations will not be consolidated

Tucson’s Midtown Station still under consideration

The U.S. Postal Service’s Arizona District announced today that no changes will be made at seven of the eight Arizona postal facilities it has been studying for possible consolidation.

The seven locations no longer being considered for consolidation are:

  • Phoenix’s McDowell Station, 2650 E. McDowell Rd.
  • Scottsdale’s Papago Retail Station, 7750 E. McDowell Rd.
  • Prescott’s Goodwin Station, 101 Goodwin St.
  • Bullhead City’s Highway Station, 990 Highway 95
  • Bullhead City’s Mojave Valley Station, 8045 Highway 95
  • Bisbee’s Warren Station, 940 State Hwy 92
  • Sedona’s West Sedona Branch, 2081 W. Highway 89A

This decision does not preclude studies at a future date for these or other locations, district officials said.

Still under consideration is Tucson’s Midtown Station, 5401 E. 5th St. The public input process via customer questionnaires regarding the possible consolidation will get under way at the Tucson location this week.

A final decision on Midtown Station will not be made until Oct. 1, at the earliest, according to USPS Arizona District officials. The earliest the facility would be consolidated into another nearby postal facility would be late in 2009.

Current economic conditions and technological advances such as email are combining to change the way people use and access services and products offered by the United States Postal Service, a self-supporting independent federal agency. Ongoing mail volume and revenue losses demand that the USPS review all postal operations to find opportunities to provide service more efficiently.

An independent federal agency, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation, 149 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes, six days a week. It has 34,000 retail locations and relies on the sale of postage, products and services, not tax dollars, to pay for operating expenses. Named the Most Trusted Government Agency five consecutive years by the Ponemon Institute, the Postal Service has annual revenue of $75 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail.
