James C. Miller III

James C. Miller III, a former Director of the U.S. Office of Management and Budget, is Senior Advisor at the international law firm Husch Blackwell Sanders LLP. He served as Chairman of the Board of Governors from January 2005 to January 2008 and has broad government, private sector, and academic experience.

Governor Miller was named a governor of the U.S. Postal Service by President George W. Bush through a recess appointment on April 22, 2003, and confirmed by the U.S. Senate in November 2004. Miller’s term expires in December 2010. He currently serves as Vice Chairman of the Audit and Finance Committee and Co-Chairman of the Governance and Strategic Planning Committee.

As the Director of the Office of Management and Budget, Governor Miller was a member of the President’s cabinet and a member of the National Security Council (1985-1988). Before that he served as Chairman of the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (1981-1985).

Governor Miller was Vice Chairman of the Administrative Conference of the United States (1987-1988) and is a Distinguished Fellow at both the Center for Study of Public Choice and the Mercatus Center at George Mason University. He is also a Senior Fellow (by courtesy) of the Hoover Institution at Stanford University, is a member of the Board of Americans for Prosperity, and is an Emeritus Member of the Board of the Progress and Freedom Foundation.

Governor Miller is a member of the Boards of Washington Mutual Investors Fund, the Tax-Exempt Fund of Maryland, the Tax-Exempt Fund of Virginia, the JPMorgan Value Opportunities Fund, and Clean Energy, Inc. In addition, Governor Miller has authored more than 100 articles in professional journals and has authored, co-authored, or edited nine books.

He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Georgia in 1964, and a doctorate in economics from the University of Virginia in 1969. He and his wife Demaris have three children and four grandchildren.
