Tis the Season… FOR MAILING
Holiday cards have been popular since 1875, when Louis Prang, a lithographer and German immigrant who settled in Boston, published his first holiday card for customers.
The U.S. Postal Service issued the first holiday stamp in1962. The green and red 4-cent stamp featured a wreath, two candles and the words “Christmas 1962.”
Americans exchange about 2 billion holiday cards each year.
The average American household mails 26 holiday cards, up from 21 cards in 2004.
About 60 percent of all holiday cards are mailed during the first two weeks of December.
About 15 percent of Americans mail their holiday cards AFTER New Year’s Day.
Red, green and gold are the most popular colors for holiday cards.
Ninety percent of holiday cards are sold in boxed form.
The Postal Service will deliver more than 20 billion cards, letters and packages between Thanksgiving and Christmas.
About one-fourth of all adults plan to travel during the holidays, a 6 percent increase over the last seven years. They might want to consider the Postal Service’s Premium Forwarding Service (PFS). PFS allows mail to be forwarded from a permanent to a temporary address for up to one year (usps.com/receive/premiumforwarding).
