Audio News Release: Mendez v. Westminster Commemorative Stamp Script

INTRO:

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the Mendez versus Westminster School District court case, which ended segregation in California schools. It also set the stage for Brown versus the Board of Education, which ended segregation nationwide.

The U.S. Postal Service is commemorating Mendez versus Westminster with a new 41-cent stamp, dedicated by Thurgood Marshall Junior, a Postal Service Board of Governors member. He’s the son of Supreme Court Associate Justice Thurgood Marshall, who was involved in the case. .......

THURGOOD MARSHALL, JR., SOUNDBITE:

My father often spoke of the importance of individuals working together to achieve great things. With this stamp, we are proud to honor the families in this case. Together they took the first steps on the journey to win equality in education for everyone in our nation.
