FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Enola C. Rice 954-436-4451 Enola.C.Rice@usps.gov October 27, 2004 www.usps.com BROWARD COUNTY ABSENTEE BALLOTS PROCESSED AND DELIVERED UPON RECEIPT PEMBROKE PINES FL - The U. S. Postal Service, South Florida District, has a special process in place for handling absentee ballots received from the Broward County Board of Elections. The South Florida District, which includes Post Offices from Pompano to Key West, has designated employees who handle incoming absentee ballots from the Broward County Board of Elections. The absentee ballots are isolated from the general mailstream and given special handling. The ballots are sorted on a designated processing machine. These ballots do not receive an official U. S. Postal Service postmark. The dates on the ballots are placed on the ballots by the Broward County Board of Elections' postage meter. The ballots are for local delivery. Mail received for local delivery is normally delivered in one day. All absentee ballots received by the Postal Service are processed and delivered immediately. There is no backlog of absentee ballots in Postal Service facilities. ### Since 1775, the U.S. Postal Service has connected friends, families, neighbors and businesses by mail. It is an independent federal agency that makes deliveries to about 140 million addresses every day and is the only service provider to deliver to every address in the nation. The Postal Service receives no taxpayer dollars for routine operations, but derives its operating revenues solely from the sale of postage, products and services. With annual revenues of more than $66 billion, it is the world's leading provider of mail and delivery services, offering some of the most affordable postage rates in the world. The U.S. Postal Service delivers more than 43 percent of the world's mail volume - some 203 billion letters, advertisements, periodicals and packages a year - and serves seven million customers each day at its 38,000 retail locations nationwide. | |
