FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Media Relations November 19, 2003 202-268-2155 Release No. 087 www.usps.com USPS FLOAT GLIDES THROUGH MACY'S THANKSGIVING DAY PARADE® WASHINGTON, D.C. - Decorative stamp images from all fifty states will be featured on the U.S. Postal Service's float in the 2003 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade®. Aptly named, the Spirit of America float will bear the colorful designs of the Postal Service's popular Greetings From America stamps. "Few events have become better known in American folklore than Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade," said David Failor, executive director of Stamp Services for the Postal Service. "And on November 27, the Postal Service will proudly place its first float in this annual event," he added. "We've selected the Greetings From America stamp images to travel on the float as they best symbolize the link the Postal Service has created among every man, woman and child in the nation." The centerpiece of this festive float is the Postal Service's ever-recognizable symbol, the Eagle. This large, bronze monument - set amidst a field of select stamp images - serves as tribute to the Postal Service's vast family of employees. Six days a week, these dedicated individuals contribute efforts within an organization that's unlike any other - they pick up, process and deliver mail to every address in America. The day after Thanksgiving also marks the beginning of the 2003 holiday mailing season. The Spirit of America float will also serve as an impressive visual reminder to customers to get an early start on posting their holiday mail and parcels. During these holidays, the USPS expects to pick up, process and deliver nearly 20 billion pieces of holiday mail and packages. - 30 -
